What is a chargeback?
A chargeback is a consumer protection tool that allows consumers to sue the card company to get money back for fraudulent payments or purchases that don’t qualify.
If you are not familiar with your credit card account or have a problem with your recent order, you can appeal the transaction. When discussing a transaction, there are usually two options: a refund or billing.
Refunds come directly from the merchant, and refunds come from the card issuer.
The first step in the dispute resolution process should be to contact the merchant directly and request a refund. In this case, you may need to bring the item to the store with a copy of the receipt, or you can contact customer service to get a refund online.
For example, I recently received an item from Amazon that did not meet the criteria. The item was unpacked and said: “Try it.” I began the dispute resolution process by contacting Amazon customer service directly via chat and explaining the problem. After a while I received a refund for the product, but that may not always be the case. If Amazon didn’t want to pay for the purchase, I would ask my credit card issuer for a refund.
If the refund request from the seller doesn’t work, the cost claim has to be taken to the next level. You start charging your card issuer directly in hopes that the transaction will be reversed.
There are several reasons why you want to dispute your credit card charge, such as fraudulent purchases, billing errors, or improper service/service offerings.
- Allegations of fraud on your account can be disputed by calling your credit card issuer or filing an objection online. This is usually a quick process by which the issuer will cancel the credit card in question and issue a new credit card.
- Even if you are willing to purchase substandard services or services that are not provided, you will have the right to appeal the charge. For example, if you buy something online, your credit card issuer can help you get your money back.
- Billing errors can also be disputed over the phone or online through your credit card issuer. Before you join your credit card company, contact the merchant first to see if you can resolve the error.
How to request a chargeback package
If the merchant’s chargeback request doesn’t work, ask the card company for a refund. Many card issuers allow you to dispute transactions by phone, mail, or online. You can also file a complaint directly through your card issuer’s mobile app.
You may need to attach supporting documents, such as copies of receipts, invoices, contracts, and all communications to the merchant when you send the invoice. We expect disputes can last up to 90 days or even shorter than two billing cycles.
Contact the merchant directly about the transaction. Sellers can cancel the transaction and return it to their MasterCard debit or credit card. Get the merchant’s phone number on the transaction receipt or confirm the MasterCard statement. To view contact information for debit card transactions, review your bank statement. Explain your situation when you contact the merchant. If applicable, ask the merchant to cancel the transaction. Or tell the merchant that you object to the charges listed on your credit card statement. The reason for cancelling the transaction may be to eliminate deposit requirements for services or goods, such as travel advances.
If you can’t resolve the issue with the merchant, call the financial institution that issues the MasterCard. Check the financial institution’s customer service number on the back of the card. Explain your reasons for canceling or objecting to the transaction. For example, explain that you officially canceled your health club membership, but the health club continues to charge your card. Or tell your bank that your MasterCard statement shows an unauthorized claim and the merchant refuses to refund it.
If all merchants or financial institutions deny your cancellation request or dispute, please contact MasterCard directly. Beginning on the date of issuance, call MasterCard Support at 1-800-307-7309. The support center cannot make decisions for merchants or banks, but can contact them on your behalf to facilitate resolution.
